Communication Challenges
When it comes to communication, I do not have any issues that I feel could use work. I find myself very easily able to communicate both through writing and by speaking, while clearly and concisely getting my thoughts across as well as listening to others’ concerns or ideas. Writing has always come easy and I have always done my best in classes that require me to write or put my thoughts into words then those that require me to do math. I write fictional stories for fun, so being able to have characters communicate properly was always a thought of mine so I made sure to research how to communicate properly. Public speaking, I started out nervous, but still did well in middle and high school. When it comes to public speaking now, I have no issues at all. My partner and I won second place at Durham College’s Marketing Competition and were told that we were only a fraction of a point away from first. This competition required us to prepare presentations in 30 minutes on a marketing issue that we had no prior knowledge of until we were sequestered in prep rooms. I always try to listen to what other people have to say because you never know when they might say something that sparks an idea in you. It is imperative to listen to constructive criticism because it helps you to improve yourself, your communication, and your work.
Ways that communication skills
can be improved are to practice a lot for public speaking, ensure you clarify
what feedback you receive, and to make sure to spell and grammar check whatever
you are writing. Other things that can be done to improve communication are
learning the basics of non-verbal communication , over-communicating, not
relying on visual aids, asking for feedback, engaging in discussion, beginning
and ending with key points, using the PIP (purpose, importance, preview)
approach, recording presentations, timing your communication correctly, getting
comfortable with public speaking by practicing, knowing your audience, having a
wow factor in presentations, earning respect, and being a good listener
(Patel, 2019). These communication tips can help those who need it due to lack
of practice or understanding of what they need to do to communicate properly.
There are many types of
communication, but the main two that are looked at are spoken and verbal.
Spoken communications tend to be informal than written communications which
tend to be formal (Venditti, 2020). When get an idea across properly, it is
best to do so in person because then you can not only speak to the person, you
can pick up and read their body language. Written communication allows
salespeople to hunt down potential leads and provide them with a formal
introduction to what they are trying to sell. Both spoken and written
communication work, but they should both be reserved for the proper time and
place in business.
